No better time to have a book or movie set during the First World War than now. I have stated this on a previous article that I had written for libertychant.com. On June 28, 2014, the world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Ferdinand that started WWI. DC’s Wonder Woman film was set during that period and it was not coincidental. Since its release the film has been met with a lot of controversy. The film to date has been banned in Lebanon, Qatar and Tunisia are Muslim majority countries. This is not due to the contents of the storyline but due to tweets of the lead actress Gal Gadot.
Gadot, an Israeli national, once tweeted her praise of the Israeli Defense Forces. Due to her not being a fan of the boycotts and refusal of those countries screening the film, Gadot tweeted her feelings about ‘FU BDM’. Regardless of the negative press, it has not hurt the box office success of the film.
Wonder Woman is set in an island where she is known as Diana, daughter of Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. The island is inhabited by women only and there was a racially diverse cast of Amazon women. Oh yay progress. No! There were NOT any black women in Ancient Greece. Again Hollywood is pushing their progressive agenda on here. Just like they are doing with other Hollywood films that shall remain unmentioned. Diana’s life changes forever when she meets an American pilot named Steve. His airplane crashes into the ocean as he was attempting to escape from the Germans.
The two found themselves having to fight the evil in the world. Steve as a spy to fight the Germans and Diana by fighting Ares. If one is familiar with Judeo-Christian tradition of how evil came about in the world, the Greek mythology being used in the film is used to mask that.
The movie does a phenomenal job of portraying the hardships of both the soldiers and civilians. The soldiers fighting in the trenches and avoiding No Man’s Land while living in constant fear of death. With all of that chaos and destruction it is no wonder that many primary sources fron that time show that many thought it was going to be the end of the world.
Most recently the United States had just commemorated the 100th anniversary of its entry to WWI on April 7 that led to 50,000 lives lost. Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States before and during the conflict ran his campaign known as ‘the man who kept us out of the war’. That was shortlived when the deep state justified American entry in the conflict with Wilsonian idealism of making the world ‘safe for democracy’. I am making an assumption. If it had not been for American entry, it would have never been revealed about corporate interest in the conflict.
In the Wonder Woman film where are the ‘merchants of death’? The merchants of death were the industries and banks that influenced American entry to WWI. Some of these include J.P. Morgan and Alfred Rothschild just to name a few. They were no where to be found in the film. Just like they are nowhere to be found in the war zones or amongst civilians that have lost everything. But their puppets were there through the chemists, soldiers, statesmen and others. The force behind the merchants of death was Ares according to the Wonder Woman film. Yet some of us refer to him as Lucifer.
In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson stated: “It is manifestly imperative that there should be a complete mobilization of the banking reserves of the United States. The burden and the privilege (of the Allied loans) must be shared by every banking institution in the country. I believe that cooperation on the part of the banks is a patriotic duty at this time, and that membership in the Federal Reserve System is a distinct and significant evidence of patriotism.”
The American soldiers that went abroad to fight in a Eurasian conflict sacrificed their lives. It was not for the love of their country but for the corporations and their cronies. After all Steve Mnuchin, the executive director of the film, has just been selected by Donald Trump to serve as the Secretary of Treasury.
This role is significant for Mnuchin who is also a Banker. The job of Mnuchin is to maintain a strong economy and to create economic and job opportunities. It even includes fighting any threat to combating and protecting the financial system which can mean fighting. The U.S. has entered so many wars after WWI and have sacrificed the liberties of Americans. This war like many others after will not be about democracy or human dignity but to benefit greed and corporate interest.
What was the Wonder Woman film trying to tell us? The fact that this movie was set in the conflict known as the ‘war to end all wars’ is suspect. It is important to note that the film was dealing with physical and supernatural forces. There is so much depth to this film that I would recommend watching it twice. I have my own answer and hopefully the film can inspire you to come up with your own.
